Monkey-Filled Trailer Overturns After Hitting Van in Ohio

A pickup truck pulling a trailer carrying 53 lab monkeys rear-ended a minivan and skidded off the freeway, police said. The monkeys were not hurt.

They were temporarily stranded in metal and wooden crates in the damaged trailer on a grassy area along the Interstate 70 highway in eastern Ohio. Zookeepers from the nearby Oglebay Good Zoo in Wheeling, West Virginia, helped police care for the monkeys after the Thursday night accident, highway patrol spokesman Lt. Roger Norris said.

A heater was placed inside the trailer to keep the monkeys warm.

The monkeys, mostly Rhesus and African Green monkeys, were bound for a Maryland laboratory, but did not appear to pose a health risk.

The driver of the truck was cited for driving too close to the van, Norris said. The van's driver, who police did not identify, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
